Colorful Ethical Patterns With Mayamiko
If you love colours, patterns and ethics, you have to love Mayamiko! The brand was established in 2013 and their collection covers clothing, acessories and homeware, but this is not only about fashion.. Their programms, impact and involvement with the community have been fantastic and an example to follow for many brands!
Mayamiko textiles are picked carefully and especially for you from the local fabrics market in Malawi. The brand works with a local cooperative of women traders to source the most exclusive print, only producing a very limited number of pieces (around 10-15). Mayamiko uses traditional african printed cotton, known locally as chitenje, they also have beautiful batik and dip dye cotton, hand dyed by Dominic, a local craftsman! All the pieces are handmade and the colour or fabric imperfections don't represent a defect, but add uniqueness to every piece. Plus, Mayamiko have Rebirth, a fully up-cycled capsule collection, giving a new life to loved reclaimed fabrics.
The brand collections are produced in their workshop, which is a Zero Waste environment - upcycle every off-cut, cutting room waste fabric or any unsold item into a new wonderful piece. They focus on efficient garment design and pattern cutting techniques, using 90-100% of the fabric when cutting! Some of the fabrics are also donated to the community.
Mayamiko Lab is a project developed by MayamikoTrust (a charity established in 2008 by Paola Masperi) to help some of the most disadvantaged people in Malawi by supporting their creative talents and turning them into sustainable activities. The Mayamiko Lab provides training in sewing and tailoring to local women, who are affected by the HIV pandemic or who are carer of HIV orphans. A part of the Mayamiko profits are used to help the charity continue their work in Malawi. The brand has also been investing in workshop activities so they can help and employe more people.
In Mayamiko, each piece is lovingly washed, cut and sewn in their ethical, Zero Waste workshop. They are commited to providing sustainable employment opportunities for local workers using locally sourced goods whilst investing in the skills and development of the community. The profits are used to grow their work and to help the community, pulling them out of poverty and giving them autonomy over their lives. The brand supports creative talents by sponsoring training and formal qualification. Mayamiko aims to promote fair trade and environmentally sustainable solutions by forging long-term relationships, investing in economic and social growth.
Mayamiko is reducing the negative impact that supply chain can have on local communities and environment, because production should never compromise life quality! Check out their beautiful collection and help them grow! On trend. With Heart.
I believe that life should be colorful and fun for everyone, and you?
